Cambridge Women lose to third placed Chichester

Cambridge Women suffered defeat at the hands of third placed Chichester City on Sunday afternoon.

It was the first game for the Skyblues in many weeks and they were dealt a blow over the weekend losing imperious midfielder Laura Brown and new signing Kim Motley to personal commitments. It was a blow to Cambridge but Liz Pamplin rejoined the squad.

Cambridge had to endure a three hour journey by road to get down to Chichester and were greeted with a pitch akin to a ploughfield. Despite this the pitch was passed fit to play. Although the surface was far from ideal Cambridge were ready to play and give it their best shot.

The opening stages of the game saw Chichester enjoy the better of possession & whilst having some speculative efforts at goal they rarely troubled Verity Crook in goal…

David Baker is cooking up a plan

Ambitious Cambridge Women have long-term plans to apply for membership of the Women’s Super League.

The club have won two South East Combination League Cups and the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup in the last three seasons, and finished seventh this term in the league.

And chairman David Baker, whose team ended the season on a high by thumping Arlesey 7-0, has big hopes for the club under the management of Kevin Hoover.

Captain Hannah Goodchild moved to right back with Emma Jenkins dropping to the bench. Faith Hewitt took her place in the midfield engine room. Sophie Thompson was unavailable so Laura Baker played the lone striker role.

Cambridge were focused for the game but didn’t know what to expect from an unpredictable Ebbsfleet side…

NAT IS THE BAKER IN CUP FINAL WIN

Cambridge Women were crowned County cup champions after a close victory over Great Shelford Ladies in an epic cup final.

With one league separating the two teams Cambridge were the favourites on paper. However Shelford have had a strong season so far and with a couple of ex Cambridge players in the team, Cambridge knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game. There were a lot of nerves in the Cambridge changing room prior to the match, the girls wanted to put on a good display and get their hands on that trophy for a second time. Shelford who were runners up in the competition last year, were just as keen to get their name on the trophy for the first time and as ‘under dogs’ they could play without too much expectation…

‘CITY’S SAWSTON STADIUM IMPORTANT FOR US TOO’

The wider benefits of Cambridge City’s plans to move to Sawston have not been fully appreciated, according to the chairman of Cambridge Women, one of City’s key partners.

City’s hopes of building a new permanent home suffered a blow when the Sawston project was not included in South Cambs District Council’s Local Plan.

But David Baker believes the fact the ground would also be home to the women as well as other teams affiliated to City as FA Charter partners, has not been widely acknowledged by the Sawston community.

“It’s disappointing the way things have gone so far,” he said…
